The Char Koay Kak seller said I am very lucky to capture these videos because this is the famous Koay Kak in Bukit Mertajam. Yes, I am very lucky to capture these videos . The seller and his daughter are very friendly.

The taste of this Koay Kak is different from others. You can find this delicious Char Koay Kak at night at Jalan Pasar, Bukit Mertajam, Penang.

Best Chicken and Pork Rice In The World

You can only find the best chicken and pork rice in the world here. Only at Jalan Danby, Bukit Mertajam. As my brother said, with its secret sauce and green pickle chilies, the rice taste heavenly.

The rice is cooked individually in the metal bowl then the soup is served using the same bowl. This is the uniqueness of this rice too. Due to the metal bowls, some people call it cup rice.

Toh Soon Cafe – Charcoal Toast

You can enjoy traditional style charcoal toast and watch how the bread is prepared at Toh Soon Cafe.

Toh Soon Cafe is situated at the alley of Campbell Street, George Town, Penang. I can find the location from the GPS too.

You will find people enjoying the tasty toast, steamed bread, fabulous coffee and half boiled eggs. From the photo you can see they use charcoal to boil water and the lower compartment for toasting breads.

Popular among locals and tourists, the place is really crowded and some have to share their table with others. People like to take photo and watch the traditional bread toasting process.

I like the colourful view of Lok Lok.

Lok Lok is one of the famous food you can find in Penang. You can find many stalls selling Lok Lok especially at Wai Sek Kai, Chai Leng Park, Penang.

Lok Lok is similar to steamboat but we don’t consume the soup.
You will find a wide variety of vegetables, meat balls, mushrooms (some up to 90 choices) with various types of sauces.

Just dip your food into the cooking pot with hot boiling water. Within seconds, you can eat them with the sauce.

Shing Kheang Aun Restaurant

Established in 1941, Shing Kheang Aun restaurant in Penang is very popular among the locals and tourists for its Hainanese cuisine and local dishes.

It was great to be there and we love the interior environment of the restaurant. The heritage prewar building, wooden chairs, wooden tables , marble floor, marble table top etc which are very well preserved.

Do take note of how they serve their customer seated on the first floor. Very interesting. They deliver the dishes from the ground floor kitchen with pulley system.

We overheard people around us in the restaurant. They were impressed by the pulley system and the old fashion style of this restaurant. Some even said they wanted to try all the dishes.

Some of the famous dishes. Fried Salted Egg with Bitter Gourd and Tofu with prawns.

With a friendly smile, the restaurant owner asked me whether we managed to finish the dishes. ” Of course!” I replied.

As this restaurant is situated in the heritage city, you can enjoy the old historical streets and buildings after having your meal at Shing Kheang Aun restaurant.

Stewart Lane

Photos taken while walking along Stewart Lane, Penang. Stewart Lane is named after Charles C. Stewart.

I was fortunate to see a milkman on his motorbike, bread seller cycled along Stewart Lane and a group of trishaws ferrying tourists for sightseeing.

The milkman drove off too fast that I was not able to take his photo.

Hainanese Mariners’ Lodge

While enjoying my walk along Stewart Lane, I spotted this light blue double-storey building which is one of the heritage buildings of Penang.

Founded by a group of Hainanese mariners, the Hainanese Mariners’ Lodge which was once home to itinerant Hainanese mariners and their families in pre-World War II days.

You can find this heritage building at 26-A Stewart Lane, George Town.

Traditional Joss Stick Maker In Penang

Finally, I had a chance to meet Mr.Lee, the traditional joss stick maker in Penang.

I saw him squatting in front of his shophouse pasting sticky powder to the thin bamboo sticks. With his permission, he happily show me the process of making joss sticks.

He allowed me to take his photos and videos and asked me whether he should take off his glasses. I told him he looks good with his glasses. Mr.Lee had eye operation recently. He wear glasses to protect his eyes from the powder of the joss sticks.

He manually mould the sticky powder to the bamboo sticks, use a roller to roll on the joss sticks (Mr.Lee told me this is bonding process) then let the joss sticks dry under the sun for 2 days.

Tourists interested to take his photos and bought the joss sticks as souvenirs. Students came to capture the photos and videos for their school projects.

You can find Mr. Lee at Lorong Muda (off Stewart Lane), George Town, Penang, Malaysia. The location is near the Goddess of Mercy (Kuan Yin) temple in Penang.
