While enjoying my walk along Stewart Lane, I spotted this light blue double-storey building which is one of the heritage buildings of Penang.
Founded by a group of Hainanese mariners, the Hainanese Mariners’ Lodge which was once home to itinerant Hainanese mariners and their families in pre-World War II days.

You can find this heritage building at [...]

Finally, I had a chance to meet Mr.Lee, the traditional joss stick maker in Penang.

I saw him squatting in front of his shophouse pasting sticky powder to the thin bamboo sticks. With his permission, he happily show me the process of making joss sticks.

He allowed me to take his photos and videos and asked me whether he should take off his glasses. I told him he looks good with his glasses. Mr.Lee had eye operation recently. He wear glasses to protect his eyes from the powder of the joss sticks.

He manually mould the sticky powder to the bamboo sticks, use a roller to roll on the joss sticks (Mr.Lee told me this is bonding process) then let the joss sticks dry under the sun for 2 days.

Tourists interested to take his photos and bought the joss sticks as souvenirs. Students came to capture the photos and videos for their school projects.

You can find Mr. Lee at Lorong Muda (off Stewart Lane), George Town, Penang, Malaysia. The location is near the Goddess of Mercy (Kuan Yin) temple in Penang.

Here are some of the videos and photo.

Ha! If you travel to Penang, do not forget to visit Chew Jetty, Tan Jetty and other clan jetties. Really thankful we can find these traditional Chinese waterfront and amazing views in Penang.

We noticed that there is a Ma Zhu temple at the end of the each jetty. Ma Zhu is worshipped as The Goddess of The Sea to protect all fishermen.

At Tan jetty you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Penang Bridge, the ferries and the Chew Jetty nearby. I asked the fisherman whether they spotted any dolphin. He said yes, they spotted dolphins and even otters relax at the jetty. Wow! I wish I can see the dolphins and otters. Of course, when the dolphins are here there will be fewer fish.

When we wanted to leave the jetty, the fisherman pointed at the Sun Princess Cruise Ship and said the ship had just arrived in Penang. We quickly snapped some photos. He said the weather is truly cold at night.

Hope you like some of these photos.

An experience driver and a car in good condition is a must. I am not kidding. The winding road is extremely steep and narrow.

Dare to visit War Museum of Batu Maung, Penang during the month of Hungry ghost ? This mighty military fortress built in 1930’s by the British to protect the island from enemies. There are underground military tunnels, intelligence and logistic centre, halls, offices, ventilation shafts, cannon firing bays, cook houses etc.
This is an outdoor museum. Do bring along a torch if you want to explore the underground secret tunnels else you will miss the mysterious tunnels. During the Japanese era, it was used as detention centre for POW’s. The fortress became a torture centre.

Some tips from War museum : Put on comfortable walking shoes & bring binoculars. Watch out for snakes & insects. We saw a snake during the visit.

The war museum is a monument mistakenly made by the British in thinking the enemy would attack from the sea thus the cannons aimed to the sea. But the Japanese invaded by land. You still can find the British telecommunication post & tomb of Sgt John Wolf.
